On arrival

Here is a list of documents that any student must get on arrival to Italy.

1. The residence permit

The residence permit is compulsory both for students coming from Member States and for students coming from the Associated Countries. You must apply for a residence permit either at the local Italian Immigration Board within 8 eight days of your arrival in Italy (Questura di BRESCIA - Ufficio Stranieri - Via Botticelli,2). The application can be made through post offices, by using the specific kits, available at the offices themselves. To apply for this permit at the local Immigration Board, you will need your Identity Card (or passport) your Health Insurance, the proof of registration at the University of Brescia, endorsed by the Italian consular/diplomatic agency at the time of issue of the admission visa, and 4 recent photographs.

2. Health care

Students from UE /EEA Countries have to register at the Azienda Sanitaria Locale di Brescia (ASL) - Via Corsica 145 or via Biseo, 17, to be allowed access to the services guaranteed by the National Health Care System. Public medical service guarantees coverage of costs related to medical treatment and admission to hospital. It is issued under presentation your European Health Insurance Card, from the Health Authorities in your home country. After registering, you will be able to choose from among the general practitioners available. This doctor will choose then be your reference point for any problem concerning your health. Visits to private approved specialists and dentists are not covered. Students who have a private insurance have to make it legally translated into Italian by the Italian consulate.

For students from other countries there are no official treaties ruling health care apart from national legislation. If this is your case, you must take out an International Health Insurance which covers costs related to medical treatment and admission to hospital. You can also take out this insurance in Italy.

Nevertheless, in order to avoid problems it is advisable to contact insurance agencies before leaving for Italy. An insurance policy is compulsory if you apply for a residence permit.

3. Tax Code (Codice Fiscale)

The Tax Code is a compulsory document if you wish to open an account at an Italian bank. This card is issued by the Ufficio Unico delle Entrate - Via Marsala, 29 Ph. +39 030 2972711 under presentation of a valid identity document: the card contains a code made up of letters and numbers which makes identification easier in the case of any tax controls. As specified above, this is not a compulsory document, but it is necessary if you wish to open a bank account. You can take tax code at International Relations Office.
