The project will promote and implement affordable and environmentally sustainable sanitation provision systems in poor urban and peri-urban areas of Iringa Municipal Council (IMC) / Tanzania. Furthermore, sanitation facilities in schools and health centers will be assessed, selected, upgraded or newly constructed, and community based solid waste collection systems established, focussing on low environmental impact, social and economic sustainability and on the potential for scaling-up.
BOKU (Institute of Sanitary Engineering and Water Pollution Control (SIG) and Institute of Waste Management (ABF)) will provide technical assistance with regard to the integration of the ROSA approach (Resource-oriented Sanitation Concepts for African Cities, developed at SIG-BOKU) into the CLUES approach (Community-Led Urban Environmental Sanitation, developed at EAWAG), share their knowledge on adapted waste management options in combination with sanitation and will contribute to this action in the fields of collection and processing of organic materials and the design and optimisation of aerobic treatment process and facilities.
