It is requested that the student already passed a course in Hydraulics or in Environmental Hydraulics and, possibly, it is highly recommended he attended at least a course in Hydrology.
The student will be able to compute the hydraulic and hydrologic load to hydraulic structures according to national and international standards on safety and environmental protection. Hydraulic aspects of reservoirs and dam design will be the subject of the first part of the course where the engineering design of all fundamental structures of dams will be investigated. The environmental compatibility of structures including minimum in-stream flow, risk analysis and flood hazard control will be assessed. In the second part of the course river training and engineering works will be investigated, including flood retention basins, torrent control structures. Principles of design of hydropowerplant and pumping stations will complete the topics addressed by the course.
Dam engineering Design flood hydrograph for hydraulic structures. Risk analysis. Dam types, glossary, dam safety, civil protection and environmental legislation. Concrete dam engineering. Dam rehabilitation: structural upgrade and waterproofing. Dam outlet works: spillways and bottom outlets. Energy dissipation. Dam safety: instrumentation and surveillance. Other hydraulic structures River engineering. Diversion works. Flood retention basins. Cross-drainage and drop structures. Hydroelectric power development. Pumping stations.

Si invitano gli studenti a verificare sempre la corrispondenza tra la bibliografia consigliata e i testi disponibili
Out of the 8 hours/week lecture schedule 5 hours/week are dedicated, on average to theory and 3 hours/week to classrom exercises. Homework is on average 1 hour per hour in the class Oral examination
Students have to attend and complete classroom exercises which will be completed as homework. Design criteria and computaion of some structures of dams and of river engineering structures including environmental impact mitigation measures will be collected in a written report delivered to the professor one week before the oral exam.
A technical visit to a hydraulic structure is scheduled in the last month of the course
