How is it possible to solve combinatorial problems in practical time? The scientific literature covers the rich set of techniques researchers have developed to tackle different combinatorial optimization problems. An expert researcher in the field of transport knows how to refine algorithm parameters to different behaviors of the optimization process using intuition and common sense. These techniques, and the parameters controlling the framework of the combinatorial optimization have been collectively learned by researchers in the field to model and solve variety of problem instances. In this presentation, a meal-delivery example is used to investigate the benefits and pitfalls of each method and shed light on how these two literatures can benefit from one another for real-time decisions.
