University Interdepartmental Research Centre Stem Cells, Bioengineering and Regenerative Medicine - STENMED

Year of Establishment: 2024

The University Interdepartmental Research Centre “Stem Cells, Bioengineering and Regenerative Medicine” (STENMED) was established within the Department of Clinical and Experimental Sciences (DSCS) at the University of Brescia, with its administrative headquarters located within the same Department.
The Centre also involves the following Departments: Department of Molecular and Translational Medicine (DMMT); Department of Medical and Surgical Specialties, Radiological Sciences and Public Health (DSMC); Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (DIMI); Department of Civil, Architectural, Land, Environmental and Mathematical Engineering (DICATAM); and Department of Information Engineering.

The primary aim of the Centre is to further advance research in the fields of bioengineering, stem cells and regenerative medicine, by strengthening and structurally organizing, from both an operational and an organizational perspective, the interdisciplinary expertise already present at the University of Brescia in the fields of engineering, biology, biotechnology and clinical medicine.

The Centre's activities include the following initiatives:
• advancing biological research, in both engineering and medical fields, aimed at the development of new and more advanced biomedical devices for the regeneration of bone, cartilage, skin, nervous and myocardial tissues;
• accelerating, wherever possible, translational medical research pathways, also through collaboration with the clinical departments and units of ASST Spedali Civili di Brescia;
• facilitating the transition to Phase I/II clinical studies in humans in the field of regenerative medicine;
• expanding and strengthening collaborations with other national and international research institutes and centres.
