Meet Xiaoqian

I’m Xiaoqian Jiang, I’m from the Basque Country and I’m currently attending the EMIMEP Erasmus Mundus program.

Q&A

Can you tell us a bit about your academic background and what led you to choose the EMIMEP program?

I am an electronic engineer, and I completed my studies at the University of the Basque Country in Spain between 2020 and 2024. During my academic journey, I developed interest in high-frequency and communication systems, particularly in amplifier design. One of my professors introduced me to the Erasmus Mundus EMIMEP program, and I found it highly appealing, not only as a way to advance my professional career in the field of electronics and photonics but also as an opportunity to broaden my personal horizons by engaging with an international academic environment.

What sparked your interest in microwave electronics and how has that shaped your academic journey so far?

My interest in electronics to be honest began in the second year of my degree when I started exploring the design and characteristics of different transistors in greater depth. My fascination with microwave electronics specifically emerged during an advanced course on high-frequency communications. I was captivated by the precision and efficiency of microwave components and their transformative impact on wireless communication and radar systems. This interest led me to focus on designing and optimizing microwave circuits, particularly through projects involving amplifier design.
Later, I chose to do my final thesis on machine learning because I realized it was a topic I had not explored during my studies. I wanted to learn it on my own, with the valuable guidance of my supervisor. Despite this detour, I remained committed to continuing my master's in microwave electronics. I believe that machine learning will be a powerful tool in the analysis of electromagnetic interference, which is a key factor in designing any high-frequency circuit.

What were your first impressions of the University of Brescia when you arrived?
My initial impressions of the University of Brescia were very positive. I found it comparable to the University of the Basque Country in terms of engineering excellence, as both institutions are highly regarded in the field. I was particularly impressed by the professors, who not only demonstrate a high level of expertise in their areas of study but also excel in English, which makes the lessons much more accessible.

How would you describe your experience so far as an international student at UniBs, both academically and personally?
As I mentioned earlier, as an international student, I have found the University of Brescia to be very welcoming. Initially, attending three hours lectures was quite challenging since I wasn't used to having a single topic covered for such a long period. However, the professors helped make these sessions more accessible by incorporating a 15 minutes break in the middle and efficiently managing the course content. After a month of settling in, I've grown accustomed to the teaching style here.
On a personal note, I want to highlight the positive impact of ESN, which has made our experience even more enjoyable by helping international students integrate smoothly. Additionally, the free sports activities offered at CUS over 10 weeks have been excellent for maintaining both our mental and physical well being. Moreover, the free transportation service is an unexpected bonus for which I am very grateful.

What do you think makes UniBs different from other universities you’ve attended during your EMIMEP experience?
During my EMIMEP experience, UniBs truly stands out for its exceptional support and facilities tailored to international students. The university and ESN offer a wide range of events designed to help students integrate and connect, which creates a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, the free transportation service and 10 week free sports activities are fantastic perks that enhance the overall student experience. The campus is impressively maintained, featuring clean rooms, a 24/7 reception that provides security and comfort, and plenty of study spaces that foster a productive academic environment.
