The first Inter-university PhD course in Sustainable Development and Climate Change starts at the IUSS School

The call for applications for admission to the first National Doctorate in Sustainable Development and Climate Change, cycle XXXVII, AA 2021-22 is now open.

3 years of studies, 105 scholarships fully funded, 30 Italian public and private universities participating in the project, under the coordination of the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS of Pavia:

The Inter-university PhD Course in Sustainable Development and Climate Change established by the IUSS Pavia University of Applied Sciences, in partnership with the 30 Italian Universities involved, has a duration of three years and aims at preparing future generations to redesign a resilient society, able to face better and manage the problem of climate change, and to rethink sustainable development processes, no longer exclusively measured in terms of mere economic growth. Central to the doctoral programme is the study of the complexity determined by the interrelationships between technological progress, availability of natural resources, migration, rights, well-being and quality of life of present and future generations, climate change, territorial specificities, and accessibility to water and food.

Thanks to the co-financing of the Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) and the 30 universities involved, 105 scholarships have been awarded, divided into 6 curricula: Earth System and Environment, Socio-economic Risk and Impacts, Technology and Territory, Theories, Institutions and Cultures, Agriculture and Forestry, Health and Ecosystem. From ecology to technology, from economics to engineering, from mathematics to philosophy, from medicine to agriculture, PhD students will have the opportunity to address the issues related to the implementation and pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda with long-term tools, strategies and policies, preparing themselves not only to change their lifestyle, but also to be promoters of the construction of a "green" future.

The Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS of Pavia, project leader and administrative seat of the Inter-university PhD course in Sustainable Development and Climate Change (PhD-SDC), together with the Center for Climate Change studies and Sustainable Actions (3CSA) of the Federation of University Schools of Advanced Studies (IUSS Pavia, Sant'Anna di Pisa and Normale di Pisa), with the support of the Network of Universities for Sustainable Development (RUS), and the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASVIS), and in agreement with 30 Italian universities participating in the project, aims to orient research activities towards the major challenges humanity faces in mitigating the effects of climate change and ensuring sustainable development.

Partnerships with various public bodies and private companies are planned.

The Enel Foundation is the project's first knowledge partner.

The successful candidates will be enrolled at the IUSS University of Pavia, administrative headquarters, and will work at one of the universities participating in the project:

The lessons will be in English and the courses will be held by professors from the thirty universities.


Applications for participation in the competition must be submitted to the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS di Pavia via web platform (www.iusspavia.it/phd-sdc) by 22 July 2021, at 12 noon.

The PhD course will start on 1 November 2021.
