The interdepartmental university center for the study of food intolerances, inflammatory bowel diseases, and their relationship with nutrition is established at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Sciences.
The activity of the Center, to be developed according to the interdisciplinary criteria, can be carried out by professors from the Departments of Clinical and Experimental Sciences, Medical-Surgical Specialties, Radiological Sciences and Public Health, Molecular and Translational Medicine.
The main objective of the Center is to promote, enhance and support scientific research in the field of Food Intolerances and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases in order to:
- improve patient care through research on pathogenetic mechanisms, clinical phenotypes and response to treatments
- promote interventions and programs for the prevention of the pathologies under study, above all as regards nutrition and other aspects of lifestyle, for the promotion and maintenance of health and wellbeing.
To achieve this, the Center can promote:
- clinical research projects with particular reference to pathogenetic aspects, prognostic factors, diagnostic procedures and assessment of the impact of therapies with particular reference to the development of innovative medical, surgical and dietetic treatments;
- epidemiological studies to evaluate the prevalence, incidence and natural history of the pathologies in study in close collaboration with health facilities of various levels, in particular, on the model already implemented in collaboration with the ASL of Brescia as Celiac Disease Observatory;
- programs for the prevention of the pathologies under study with particular regard to eating habits and lifestyles for the promotion of health and wellness screening;
- programs for the early identification of those at risk;
- interaction with Patient Associations, the medical-scientific world and with manufacturing and distribution companies.
The Center strengthens the integration between specialized medicine and general medicine by developing a web platform and toolkits of essential information to be exchanged in the diagnostic and follow-up phase, and the adoption of flow charts that specify and assign roles different in the follow-up phases.
