Recognition of foreign academic qualifications

Academic qualifications obtained abroad are not automatically recognized in Italy, but are assessed on a case-by-case basis, according to the following criteria:

  • purpose of the request
  • type and level of the qualification achieved
  • contents of the completed study path
  • structure of the education system that issued the qualification.

For detailed information about recognition procedures in Italy, please consult carefully the portal of CIMEA - Information Center on Academic Mobility and Equivalence.

As CIMEA specifies:

"Our system is still culturally influenced by the concept of nostrification (equipollenza) as the exclusive possibility for recognition of foreign qualifications. On that matter, it is noteworthy that Law 148/2002 no longer uses this term and that, as a result of Art. 9 the previous procedures of nostrification (equipollenza) were repealed".
