UNIBS Sostenibile, through the Commission for Sustainable Development, aims to promote the application of sustainability principle according to the following synergetic and in some ways complementary definitions:
- as a development able to meet present needs without compromising the possibility of future generations to meet their own needs and realize their goals, according to the Bruntland Report of 1987;
- as an integration between conservation and development: conservation, to keep human activities quite below the Earth’s capacity limits, development to enable all people to enjoy long, healthy and rewarding lives, according to “Caring for the Earth: A Strategy for Sustainable Living”, a publication by the World Conservation Union (IUCN), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
