At the Department of Clinical and Experimental Sciences the Interdepartmental University Research Center on “Adaptation and tissue and organ regeneration” was established.

The Center’s activities include professors and researchers from the Department of Clinical and Experimental Sciences and the Department of Medical-Surgical Specialties, Radiological Sciences and Public Health.

Tissue regeneration is a biological phenomenon that contributes to the maintenance of our body’s homeostasis; it can also be induced or guided and in this case it is used in different fields of medicine to restore anatomically and functionally compromised situations. Adaptation is our body’s ability to cope with different environmental conditions and metabolic changes in organs and systems. The main scientific purpose of the Center is the promotion, implementation and dissemination of research and studies in the field of adaptation, tissue damage, regeneration and plasticity of tissues and organs. For these purposes, the Center intends to promote and implement research
interdisciplinary, able to evaluate the molecular and morphological mechanisms underlying the degenerative, regenerative, plastic and adaptive processes of the various cell types within the tissues to which they belong and the organs, in order to contribute to the advancement of cognitive, technological and clinical development in the field of medicine and tissue engineering, aimed at the repair and regeneration of tissues and the re-establishment of organ functions, also developing issues concerning psychosomatic aspects.

In detail, the Center intends to promote:

  1. research and studies aimed at identifying the biological and physio-pathological processes at the basis of tissue adaptation and aging considering both the macroscopic and microscopic morphological aspects, and ultrastructural and molecular aspects; identification of new methods of prevention, diagnosis and therapy;
  2. research and studies concerning the molecular processes that induce suffering and cell death;
  3. research and studies aimed at identifying the processes that regulate the cellular response to oxidative stress, one of the main actors responsible for tissue and organ degeneration;
  4. research and studies aimed at deepening the damage repair and tissue regeneration processes;
  5. research and studies aimed at understanding the influence of tissue microenvironment in the control of cell proliferation and differentiation processes;
  6. research and studies concerning the identification and application of innovative tissue engineering techniques aimed at the generation of study models of pathophysiological processes related to the onset of degenerative diseases;
  7. research and studies aimed at the application of tissue engineering techniques aimed at obtaining tissue substitutes for applications in regenerative medicine;
  8. research and studies aimed at the use of new methods and biologically active substances in tissue regeneration;
  9. research and studies to investigate adaptive psychological aspects.
