Interuniversity Research Centre on Malaria – Italian Malaria Network (CIRM-IMN)

Year of Establishment: 2017

The Interuniversity Research Centre on Malaria – Italian Malaria Network (CIRM-IMN) was established at the University of Milan.

The Centre brings together researchers from the University of Milan and the following partner universities: the University of Turin, the University of Eastern Piedmont, the University of Camerino, the University of Siena, the University of Perugia, the University of Naples Federico II, the University of Bologna, Sapienza University of Rome, the University of Pisa and the University of Brescia, through its Department of Clinical and Experimental Sciences.

The Centre conducts research and promotes scientific activities in the following areas:

• biological, ecological, genetic and molecular aspects relevant to the control of Anopheles mosquito vectors, as well as the study of their interactions with malaria parasites and their hosts;
• the biology, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, epidemiology, prophylaxis and pharmacological control of Plasmodium, including its interactions with the human host, the clinical management and treatment of malaria infection and clinical trials;
• the biology, molecular biology, immunology, genetics and pharmacological control of animal models of malaria;
• the design, synthesis and analytical and biological evaluation of new molecules with antimalarial activity;
• collaboration with the National Research Council (CNR), research institutions and public and private organizations in Italy and abroad, with a particular focus on malaria-endemic countries;
• the training of new researchers and the dissemination of scientific findings;
• public outreach and communication aimed at raising awareness of malaria as a major public health issue.
