A team led by the DSMC has secured second place in the prestigious MSLesSeg ICPR 2024 Competition on Multiple Sclerosis Lesion Segmentation. This challenge, focused on segmenting lesions caused by multiple sclerosis on MRI T1, T2, and FLAIR images, represents a significant milestone in the field of medical imaging.
The team includes Eng. Edoardo Coppola, a PhD student in Technology for Health, with the collaboration of his supervisors, Profs. Alberto Signoroni and Mattia Savardi of the DSMC. The project also involved Prof. Roberto Gasparotti (DCMS) and Prof. Sergio Benini of the Department of Information Engineering.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease that affects millions of people worldwide. In MS, different areas of the brain become inflamed, damaging the myelin, the fatty tissue that surrounds and insulates nerve fibers. This segmentation approach aims to overcome current benchmarks by eliminating user interaction and ensuring robust lesion detection at different time points, encouraging innovation and improving existing methodologies.
In addition to the already mentioned members, all part of the team from the DSMC MediMint (Medical Imaging and Multimodal Intelligence) Laboratory, special thanks go to Dr. Luca Bassi from Neuroradiology ASST for his generous collaboration.

Congratulations to the entire team!
