The growing awareness of sustainability has been pushing supply chains to evolve into more sustainable systems. A sustainable supply chain can be seen as a complex network of entities that manage the flow of products from suppliers to customers—including returns—while simultaneously pursuing social, environmental, and economic objectives. However, integrating these goals with the traditional focus on profit remains a significant challenge. One way to address this challenge is through the development of decision-support tools to support supply chain managers. This talk explores such tools from a systems perspective, focusing on optimisation-based models that incorporate sustainability objectives alongside supply chain characteristics and constraints. These models enable the design and planning of sustainable supply chains by identifying compromise solutions that balance economic, environmental, and social goals. Finally, key perspectives and challenges in advancing sustainable supply chains are discussed, highlighting opportunities for future research in this field.
