Year of Establishment: 2021
The “E.S.A.” University Research Centre for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer was established within the Department of Clinical and Experimental Sciences (DSCS) of the University of Brescia, with its administrative headquarters located within the Department.
The Centre’s main objectives are to:
- Promote, support, develop and disseminate studies and research on hereditary cancers, with particular emphasis on breast and ovarian cancer.
- Obtain the specific genetic profile of individuals at risk, enabling:
- Assessment of hereditary cancer risk;
- The development of clinical and instrumental surveillance programmes aimed at early diagnosis;
- The possible use of pharmacological and surgical interventions to reduce risk.
- Identify cognitive strategies to help individuals effectively process the information obtained and make informed decisions about the options and choices they may face in the future.
- Research and develop targeted molecular therapies, including precision medicine, personalised medicine and precision care.
- Explore regulatory issues and relevant case law concerning access to increasingly sophisticated and costly therapies, which may be difficult to accommodate within current healthcare policy frameworks.
The Centre’s activities will be carried out in close collaboration with, and with the support of, E.S.A. (Educazione Salute Attiva), an association founded in 2007 that has consistently been committed to raising awareness and providing information on cancer-related issues, particularly breast and ovarian cancer. Its work focuses both on prevention and on supporting patients undergoing treatment, with the aim of improving their quality of life.
