Research Centre for Environmental Remediation and the Recovery of Degraded Areas and Contaminated Sites

The Research Centre for Environmental Remediation and the Recovery of Degraded Areas and Contaminated Sites was established at the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture, Land, Environment and Mathematics (DICATAM) of the University of Brescia. The Centre's administrative headquarters are located within the same Department.
The Centre's activities focus on the analysis and testing of planning and design frameworks for the redevelopment of areas that have become derelict due to environmental degradation or contamination. These activities are carried out within a framework of sustainable development and spatial planning aimed at the future reuse of such areas for productive or residential purposes.
To support the dissemination of scientific and cultural knowledge in these fields and to foster the involvement of relevant professional and business communities, as well as the competent institutional and economic authorities, the Centre draws on its own organisational structure and on contributions from qualified experts across multiple disciplines.
The Centre's objectives are to:
- systematically collect and organise bibliographic resources on environmental remediation and the redevelopment of degraded areas and contaminated sites;
- investigate the issues that hinder the remediation and redevelopment of degraded areas and contaminated sites in Italy;
- develop intervention methodologies to facilitate environmental remediation and the redevelopment of degraded areas and contaminated sites;
- promote training initiatives for university staff;
- promote collaboration and scientific exchange with similar institutions in Italy and abroad;
- encourage cultural exchanges among students through internships at universities and similar institutions in Italy and abroad, as well as reciprocal exchange opportunities;
- promote cultural and educational initiatives, as well as targeted support for public administrations and private entities, on issues relating to environmental remediation and the urban redevelopment of degraded areas and contaminated sites;
- conduct scientific and technical research in the Centre's areas of expertise;
- provide technical consultancy to public and private entities in the Centre's areas of expertise;
- disseminate knowledge within the scientific community and civil society on the topics addressed by the Centre.
