Brescia Hosts the National Meeting of the Doctoral Program in Space Science and Technology
From September 9 to 11, 2026, the Università degli Studi di Brescia will host a three-day event dedicated to research, innovation, and advanced training in the space sector, organized by the Doctoral Program of National Interest in Space Science and Technology (DIN-SST).
The initiative will bring together doctoral students, faculty, researchers, and representatives from institutions and industry from all over Italy in Brescia, offering an important opportunity to discuss the scientific and technological challenges facing the space sector and its applications.
The event is organized by the National Doctoral Program in Space Science and Technology (DIN-SST), in collaboration with the Università degli Studi di Brescia, the University of Trento, Confindustria Brescia, and the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), through the contribution of its Pavia branch. Prof. Roberto Iuppa, Coordinator of the DIN-SST, is responsible for the scientific coordination of the initiative, while Prof. Germano Bonomi of the Università degli Studi di Brescia is overseeing the local organization.
The event will open on September 9 in the Aula Magna of the Department of Economics at the Università degli Studi di Brescia with a roundtable discussion (Doctoral Education and Industry: Advanced Training, Research, and Skills for Innovation) focused on doctoral education, research, and innovation within the context of space sciences. Speakers will include representatives from the Ministry of Universities and Research, the Italian Space Agency, the INFN, and the national academic community. The opening day will conclude with an event open to the public. At 6:30 p.m., the seminar “Wave upon Wave: How Gravitational Waves Help Us Understand Our Universe” will be held by astrophysicist Massimo Della Valle (INAF). The session will offer an opportunity to explore one of the most fascinating frontiers of contemporary astrophysics: the study of gravitational waves and their contribution to our understanding of the universe.
The events on September 10 will take place at the Confindustria Brescia headquarters, where dialogue between universities and industry will be the focus of the program. The session will be dedicated to the theme “Bridging Space Research & Industry,” the central theme of the entire event and an explicit call to strengthen the connection between academic research, major scientific infrastructures, and the industrial sector. The program will feature presentations by representatives from the aerospace sector, poster sessions, and networking opportunities between doctoral students and industry representatives, with the aim of fostering the development of high-tech collaborations and professional opportunities.
On September 11, the event will continue at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the Università degli Studi di Brescia with presentations by doctoral students, an awards ceremony for the best scientific contributions, and further opportunities for discussion among participants.
The joint participation of universities, research institutions, and the industrial sector confirms the strategic role of the National Doctoral Program in Space Science and Technology in training new, highly qualified professionals and in developing an Italian supply chain capable of addressing the major challenges of space exploration, Earth observation, telecommunications, and advanced technologies for the future.
The event also represents an important opportunity to highlight the Brescia region as a hub where scientific research, technological innovation, and the business world converge, thereby strengthening collaborations among academic institutions, research centers, and the industrial sector.
