The CARAMEL project aims to develop a demonstrative plant for recovering strategic materials from spent lithium-ion batteries. The electrification of the transportation sector, crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, relies on lithium batteries, but their production is threatened by limited resources. Led by Professor Elza Bontempi at the University of Brescia, this initiative has secured approximately 1 million euros in funding from MUR's FISA-2022 projects. The project strives to pioneer a new technology based on carbothermic processes, showcasing the commitment of UniBs to energy transition, circular economy, and sustainability. The success of the CARAMEL project is underscored by its national prominence in environmental sciences, receiving support from prestigious funds and collaboration with various partners.
