Introduction - Department of Economics and Management

Scala contrada Santa Chiara

The Department of Economics and Management was established in 2012 through the merger of the former Departments of the Faculty of Economics, which over the years succeeded in integrating their scientific and teaching expertise while developing innovative projects across various fields of economics.

The Department’s Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes provide a solid foundation for understanding economic, business and financial systems, complemented by the acquisition of the professional skills needed to enter organisations—both profit and non-profit—of any type and size.
Teaching activities cover a wide range of subjects, including business studies, economics, law, quantitative disciplines and socio‑historical studies.

Courses are also offered to develop foreign language competence and IT skills. Thanks to long‑standing relationships with the business community, students can enhance their training through internships and work placements in public and private institutions. In addition, numerous partnerships with foreign universities facilitate participation in the Erasmus programme and in double‑degree programmes with institutions in the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain.

The educational offer is further enriched by two doctoral programmes. The international PhD in Models and Methods for Economics and Management – Analytics for Economics and Management (AEM) initiates participants into theoretical and applied research, providing training oriented towards the use of quantitative and computational methodologies, supported by an international academic board and close connections with the business world.
The PhD in Business and Law – Institutions and Enterprise: Value, Rules and Social Responsibility (B&L) adopts a synergistic approach combining the analytical tools of business economics with legal methodology. Its aim is to train scholars and professionals capable of understanding the relevance of values, principles and rules—which concern both enterprises and institutions—for responsible and sustainable management characterised by efficiency, effectiveness and ethical‑social legitimacy.

The Department’s research activity reflects its multidisciplinary nature, with more than seventy researchers working within their respective areas of expertise. Over time, an increasing number of them have gained significant international research experience, taken on leadership roles in national and European academic societies, and coordinated research projects of national and international relevance.

Scientific output has often been published in leading journals and by highly prestigious publishers within the relevant disciplines, and is regularly presented at major conferences and specialised workshops. The Department has repeatedly hosted meetings of academic societies and offers an extensive programme of seminars featuring international speakers, organised also in collaboration with major research centres.
