Who we are - DICATAM

The Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture, Land and Environment and Mathematics (DICATAM) was established in 2012 following the merger of the Department of Civil Engineering (founded in 1988, six years after the University of Brescia was established, and later renamed the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture, Land and Environment) and the Department of Mathematics (established in 1999). DICATAM is one of the three departments within the Engineering Macro-area (formerly the Faculty of Engineering).

The Department is characterised by the presence of research groups with a strongly interdisciplinary focus, active in the fields of civil and building engineering and construction; techniques and strategies for land management, environmental remediation and conservation; as well as mathematical and physical sciences and agricultural sciences. The interdisciplinary nature of the research carried out by the various groups within the department is well established and is a key factor in its scientific output, which is highly regarded internationally. Alongside significant scientific accolades, the department’s work is characterised by a strong commitment to the local area: research carried out on behalf of third parties and, more generally, as part of its ‘third mission’, is extensive and of high quality, and is carried out through fruitful collaborations with numerous local, national and international companies, as well as local authorities and institutions.

DICATAM offers three three-year bachelor’s degree programmes (Civil Engineering, Land and Environmental Engineering, Sustainable Agricultural Systems), three master’s degree programmes (Civil Engineering, Land and Environmental Engineering, Technologies for Ecological Transition in Agriculture), an English-taught Master’s degree with a strong international focus (Civil and Environmental Engineering), a five-year single-cycle Master’s degree with European recognition (Architectural Engineering) and a professional degree in Building Techniques.

There are approximately 1,300 students enrolled in the department’s programmes.

The Department runs a PhD programme in Civil, Environmental, International Cooperation and Mathematical Engineering (DICACIM).

The Department carries out its activities in the three areas (research, teaching and third mission) in accordance with the requirements of ANVUR’s self-assessment and accreditation system (AVA).
