The show “Creature: Of Plants, Insects, and the Human Heart” is a fascinating journey into the world of the famous German naturalist and painter Maria Sibylla Merian. It is a passionate account of her life as a woman, artist, and curious researcher who, through her study of the wonders of creation, speaks to us of dreams, freedom, and beauty.
The play traces the life of Maria Sibylla Merian, born in 1647: an extraordinary woman who defied the conventions of her time to devote herself to the study of insects—work that laid the foundation for modern entomology. With her incredible artistic talent, Maria Sibylla innovatively documented the metamorphosis of caterpillars into butterflies.
Through captivating scenes, the audience will follow Maria Sibylla on her adventures from Germany to the Netherlands and on to the rainforest of Suriname, where she conducted some of her most important research.
This show is designed to inspire boys and girls to explore STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through the extraordinary life and discoveries of one of the first known German female scientists, whose methods and conclusions are still recognized as valid today. We also believe that the fact that Merian was able to combine art and scientific research in a revolutionary way is particularly fascinating and inspiring for younger generations.
