fib medal

The International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib) awarded the fib medal to Prof. Giovanni Plizzari of DICATAM of the University of Brescia, with the motivation “In recognition of significant personal contributions to structural concrete and to the fib”. The award is presented every two years to two researchers for their contributions within the association and was given by the fib President, Prof. Steven Foster from the University of New South Wales (Sydney), during the general assembly of fib in Christchurch, New Zealand. Unfortunately, Prof. Plizzari could not attend in person (even as Italy’s representative) due to institutional commitments at the University of Brescia. Notably, Prof. Plizzari contributed to drafting the latest edition of the fib Model Code, a pre-normative document serving as a reference for European standards (Eurocodes), with responsibility for one of the chapters. Prof. Plizzari also chairs the fib “Achievement Award for Young Engineers (AAYE)” committee, which selects winners of an award presented every two years to two young professionals in research or practice. He has coordinated two fib working groups: one on pavement design and another on reinforcement anchoring. Additionally, he has served as editor for three books (bulletins) published by the federation and contributed to several others. He organized two international fib workshops in Brescia, in 2010 and 2018, in collaboration with Professor Fausto Minelli, as well as a conference in 2012 with Professor Giovanni Metelli, both from the structural engineering group. The award recognizes the work carried out at the DICATAM department and the Pietro Pisa Laboratory of the University of Brescia.
