The University of Brescia, in collaboration with the European Commission, contributes to the “2023 Report on the Quality of Life in European Cities”. Professor Nicola Pontarollo, an Associate Professor of Economic Policy at UniBs, is a co-author, being the only external contributor to the Commission. The report evaluates the satisfaction of residents in 83 major European urban areas, with over 70,000 respondents. Overall, the satisfaction rate is high, averaging 87%, with nearly 9 out of 10 residents expressing contentment. Capitals are seen as hubs for job opportunities and housing, while smaller cities are perceived as safer, cleaner, and more suitable for families. The 2023 survey, the first post-COVID-19, highlights the impact of the pandemic on urban infrastructure, healthcare systems, and European economic and social dynamics. Notably, increased feelings of loneliness and social isolation are observed, especially in cities; however, those living in cities with more green spaces and access to cultural services report better well-being.
