Combined Architectural Design for the Built Environment

The group

The group deals with Architectural Design through multidisciplinary research aimed at investigating the close relationship between the buildings’ morphological-type features and construction technologies, as well as architectures’ relations with their cultural, social, and environmental context.
The group’s studies combine the knowledge of Architectural and Urban Composition with that of Civil Engineering. The aim is to define rehabilitation design processes and/or of new construction, according to principles of multi-scalarity and interdependence between the specific fields involved.
Ongoing teaching and research activities promote design thinking in suburban and marginal territories (resulting in irregular settlements characterised by discontinuity, heterogeneity, and fragmentation) where Architecture can give a decisive contribution with its aptitude for prefiguration.
In these contexts, Architectural Design is looking for combined architectural, urban planning, landscape, structural and energy intervention mechanisms, matching pragmatic demands often related to a state of constant emergency.
For the research group, it is possible to identify architectural principles of a “re-compositional” nature capable of considering a “second time” for built environment, starting from those small fragments in which positive elements linked to collective living still exist.

Research avtivity

The group focuses its studies towards:

  • social housing integrated architectural renewal,
  • design of permanent architectures for temporary living,
  • development of innovative scenarios for the rehabilitation of brownfields.

This is possible thanks to its involvement in national and international research projects and through an established network with public and private research organisations

SDG - Sustainable Development Goals

The Architectural Design Studio aims at contributing to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda’s goals for Global Sustainable Development. In particular, the actions in place comply with Goal No. 11 «Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable', Sub-goal No. 11.1 ‘By 2030, ensure access to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services for all and regenerate slums" and sub-goal No. 11.3 ‘By 2030, empower inclusive and sustainable urbanisation and the capacity to plan and manage human settlement that is fully, integrated and sustainable in all countries».
