Alongside the two fundamental objectives of teaching and research, the Department, in line with the University, pursues the Third Mission; that is, it works to promote the direct application, enhancement and use of knowledge in order to contribute to the social, economic and cultural development of society.
This includes activities aimed at transforming knowledge generated by research into knowledge that is useful for productive purposes, such as contract research, the creation of new businesses and technology transfer. It also encompasses scientific outreach activities such as organising events, continuing professional development, scientific communication, public engagement and publishing.
With this in mind, like every unit within the University, the Department is committed to communicating and disseminating knowledge through direct engagement with the local community and all its stakeholders.
Director’s Delegate for the Third Mission: Prof. Sergio Vergalli
