Hydraulic Structures and Hydrology - DICATAM

Group Description

The Hydraulic Constructions and Hydrology research group of the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture, Land, Environment, and Mathematics studies all phenomena related to the water cycle in the atmosphere and on the Earth's surface, including its various implications for human use and natural systems, and develops applied and design aspects of hydraulics.

Research Activities

In the hydrological field, the research group has focused on monitoring and estimating precipitation in the Brescia area and analyzing changes in water availability in Alpine basins to prevent natural disasters and manage climate transition. In the field of hydraulic constructions, work has focused on the design and operation criteria for wastewater and rainwater drainage systems, land protection structures against floods, and low-impact solutions for climate change adaptation. Other research activities include:

  • design criteria for flood control basins,
  • low environmental impact solutions for climate change adaptation in urban environments,
  • monitoring and forecasting the evolution of snow and glacial resources, including in the context of climate change,
  • flood control and water resource management in multi-use reservoirs,
  • study of the diffusion of ferroalloy dust rich in heavy metals (Pb, Mn, As) in unsaturated soil,
  • statistical estimation of flood crests and the shape of flood hydrographs, mapping of flood hazard and hydraulic risk in relation to embankment safety,
  • energy recovery from water,
  • irrigation systems in water-scarce areas.

International connections in the sector have facilitated the establishment of the English-language master's degree program in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
