SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
The Advanced Course in “Global Health” aims to meet the training needs in the field of epidemiology and control strategies of the main health problems present in contexts with limited resources and/or of interest to the most vulnerable population groups.
At the end of the Course, students must achieve the following general objectives:
- Identify and critically analyze the determinants of health and the main health problems;
- Collect and critically analyze qualitative and quantitative data relevant for improving health and healthcare;
- Apply research methodologies to respond to health needs, particularly in contexts with limited resources and for vulnerable populations;
- Plan sustainable interventions for the improvement of health systems taking into account cultural diversity and ethical and social responsibilities;
- Communicate clearly and effectively and work professionally in a multidisciplinary team.
The Advanced Course in Global Health is officially recognized as a Core Course of the European Master in International Health of the TropEd circuit, within which it entitles students to 20 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS/TropEd) (24 CFU).
Please note that the criteria and documentation required for enrollment in the aforementioned Basic Course in Brescia may not correspond to the criteria and documentation required for enrollment in other Courses that complete the European Master in Global Health and that take place in other locations, with particular regard to knowledge of foreign languages (international language certifications) and experience in the field (requirement of having spent a certain period in countries with limited resources).
The registration fee for this call covers only enrollment in the aforementioned Advanced Course in “Global Health” of the University of Brescia.
The Course, lasting 16 weeks (03 February - 06 June 2025), for a total of 368 hours of contact lessons (in person or online), plus 232 hours of self-learning, will be divided into 5 teaching modules as specified below:
- Orientation to the Course and Introduction to Global Health
- Global health and Health system
- Basic epidemiology and research methods
- International cooperation and migration health
- Global burden of diseases, health problems and responses:
- Submodule 5A: Non-communicable diseases
- Submodule 5B: Communicable diseases
- Submodule 5C: Mother and child health
The lessons, which will begin on February 03, 2025 and will end on June 06, 2025, will take place from Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00.
The lessons will be delivered in mixed mode:
- 200 hours in person (not available remotely), at the Medicine and Surgery Building of the University of Brescia, Viale Europa n. 11 - Brescia
- 168 hours remotely, in synchronous and asynchronous mode
The teaching activities will be held partly in Italian and partly in English, thus requiring a good knowledge of both languages, as simultaneous translation is not provided.
The Course will be implemented through collaboration with other national and international academic institutions. In particular, it will benefit from the cultural, logistical and educational support of the following organizations:
- CUAMM Doctors with Africa - Non-Governmental Organization recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pursuant to Law 49/87, based in Padua
- Doctors Without Borders Italy - ONLUS based in Rome
- Medicus Mundi Italy - Non-Governmental Organization recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pursuant to Law 49/87, based in Brescia
- Fondazione Museke ONLUS based in Brescia.
The final certificate will be issued to those who have attended at least 80% of the course hours and passed the assessment tests scheduled during and at the end of the course.
The verification methods provided are the following:
- Partial multiple choice tests during the weeks of in-person attendance (each test will be worth 15% of the final score);
- Students, divided into small groups, will have to write a proposal for a health project on a topic given by the Coordinator. The project proposal will be presented and discussed in English, at the time of the final exam; this exam will represent 20% of the total score;
- Final exam consisting of an individual oral test on all the topics covered during the Course (20% of the total score)
Each test is considered passed when the minimum score of 18/30 is achieved.
The final score will be the average of the scores of the six tests.
In the event of failure of one or more of the first 4 tests, students will have the possibility of repeating each test only once. A failed test must be retaken within 2 weeks.
The final grade, expressed in thirtieths, will be converted into a European assessment according to the following table:
- A = 29/30 to 30/30
- B = 27/30 to 28/30
- C = 25/30 to 26/30
- D = 23/30 to 24/30
- E = 18/30 to 22/30
- F = failure
ADMISSION QUALIFICATIONS
The qualifications required for admission to the Course are:
- Master's Degree/Specialist Degree in Medicine and Surgery, Biology, Biotechnology, Pharmacy and Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies;
- University Degree or Diploma in Nursing, Health Assistant, Midwife or in possession of the qualifications of Professional Nurse, Midwife, Health Assistant, obtained before the establishment of the Degree Courses, together with the Secondary Education Diploma and registration in the professional register;
- Other Degree in the health sector subject to the motivated approval of the Course Board of Directors.
Foreign qualifications:
Possessors of a foreign qualification declared equivalent to one of the aforementioned qualifications by an Italian academic authority in accordance with current legislation are admitted to the Course.
In the case of possession of a foreign qualification not previously declared equivalent by an Italian academic authority, candidates may request the Course Board of Directors to recognize the validity of the qualification for the limited purposes of participation in the Course itself; in this case, documentation certifying the qualification obtained must be attached:
- Degree certificate translated and legalized and, if available, Declaration of Value issued by the competent Italian diplomatic representation in the country where the qualification was obtained;
- pending the Declaration of Value, the candidate may temporarily attach a Self-Declaration of the appropriateness of the qualification signed by the candidate and, in the case of affiliation to a reference Organization or Association, countersigned by it.
To confirm the validity of the qualification, by the end of the course, the presentation of the Declaration of Value issued by the competent Italian diplomatic representation in the country where the qualification was obtained is required.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The maximum number of places available for the Course is 25 units, the minimum number for the activation of the Course is 12 units.
