DSMC - Research

The DSMC's chief mission is to project and develop advanced research and new ways of teaching and conveying knowledge and research achievements, as well as promote financing to several branches of medicine, such as: Anesthesiology, Audiology, Cardiology, Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy, Hygiene, Nursing, Occupational Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Nephrology, Urology, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Ophtalmology, Odontostomatology, Medical Oncology, Orthopedics, Otolaryngology.

The DMSC includes medical clinical, surgical and service institutes, radiological sciences and in general health care institutes, such as Hygiene, Occupational Medicine and Forensic Medicine.  Its activities, therefore, are comprised within the clinical research domain, with disciplines that span from epidemiology and prevention to diagnostics and treatment of the main oncological and degenerative diseases, also including acute illnesses in intensive care contexts. Alterations of the neurological development, especially in children and teens, are part of the research activity, too. This is an instance of how the contribution of skills from different scientific fields to the study of a medical problem or a pathological condition allows the researchers to view it in its complexity and entirety. Thus, in the DSMC synergies have been developed across its institutes, resulting in lines of research both innovative and attracting professionals and research funds.

The main lines of research, the outcome of the integration of the Department's institutes, are the following:

  • Epidemiology and identification of risk factors
  • Diagnosis and oncological disease treatment
  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases involving organs and apparatuses of interest for the Department's researchers
  • Pain therapy and palliative care
  • Innovation in the surgical perioperative, anesthesiologic and imaging technique domain.
