The group
The Numerical Analysis group studies and develops numerical methods for solving partial differential equations that model problems in the field of fluid-dynamics, computational mechanics, biomedicine or ecology.
Research activity
The research activity of the group is oriented towards the approximation of partial differential equations and contributes, following various approaches,to the development of new computational methodologies that are based on theinteraction between differential models (also of different nature) and on theuse of various numerical methods. The main research topics on which the groupis currently working, for what concerns theoretical aspects, as well as applicative and computer simulation ones are:
- immersed boundary' and 'Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian' numerical methodsfor the fluid-structure interaction problem,
- finite element methods for the approximation of eigenvalue problems in mixed form,
- domain decomposition methods for multiphysics problems, such asthe coupling of the Stokes with the Darcy equations for the simulation of the filtration of fluids in porous media,
- domain decomposition methods for problems with non-conforming meshesat the interface with applications to solid mechanics and to fluid dynamics,
- high order methods (spectral element methods) for the approximationof the equations of cardiac electrophysiology,
- numerical methods for the approximation of demographic models in ecology, forthe assessment and management of risks associated with harmful insects.
