The Department of Law routinely carries out third mission activities within the framework of the University of Brescia’s social engagement with the local community. The Strategic Guidelines and Objectives defined in the Department’s Strategic Plan are aligned and integrated with those set out in the University Strategic Plan.
Alongside a wide range of occasional initiatives linked to the research activities of academic staff—which therefore vary over time according to research interests and agendas—some actions are characterized by greater stability and continuity. These include initiatives connected to the Legal Clinics, educational experiences that also maintain strong links with the local community, as well as activities promoted through University Centers: LOG – the University Center for Gender Studies, which explores gender-related issues and topics through an interdisciplinary approach; and U4P – University for Peace that conducts and coordinates interdisciplinary studies and research on peace, terrorism, and, more broadly, conflict management.
Equally significant are the Department’s relationships with local correctional institutions. Over several decades, these partnerships have made it possible, on the one hand, to provide individuals in detention with access to university education and, on the other hand, to offer valuable opportunities for individual students and student groups enrolled in the Department’s degree programs to gain direct experience within prison settings.
Finally, among the Department’s long-standing initiatives, particular mention should be made of those related to multiculturalism. Over the years, these have led to educational and dialogue projects involving students from diverse cultural backgrounds, as well as their respective communities, in line with a strategic priority of the University that finds distinctive expression and sensitivity within the Department of Law.
