Architectural and Urban Design for the Enhancement of Places

The group

The group was formed in 2010 around the issues of the relationship between Architecture and Place. It wants to underline that tradition of architectural culture which is strictly connected to the characteristics of the contexts, both in urban and naturalistic environments and for new architecture or the transformation of existing buildings. Attention to the history of a place is considered essential to create that necessary process of continuity between collective memory and contemporary innovation.

Research activity

The group deals with three main areas of research: the temporary use house between architecture and neuroscience; the sustainable enhancement of disused military sites; the concept of micro-architecture.
Since 2001, relating to needs of the human being with the critical issues of modern dwelling and basing on the concepts of “threshold”, “in-between” and “uncanny”, studies the new ways of dwelling in European cities of the 21st Century.
Recently, it is dealing with the analysis of threshold spaces to manage health emergency situations and the relationship between housing and neuroscience.
Since 2011, in collaboration with Italian and foreign institutions, the group has studied disused military complexes built before and during the First World War and the Cold War, in Italy and in other European countries.
Since 2014, it has used the concept of micro-architecture to insert new services in historical sites where the architecture must have a low environmental impact, both from the aesthetic and energy consumption points of view.
