The Observatory was established through the transformation of the Research Centre for the Protection of Pregnancy and the Prevention of Perinatal Disorders, formerly directed by Prof. Tiziana Frusca.

The Observatory’s research programme focuses on the following areas:
- Studies on the epidemiology and pathogenesis of pregnancy-related complications.
- Development of innovative protocols for the management and prevention of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, preterm birth, and fetal growth restriction.
- Epidemiological and biomolecular studies on preterm birth.
- Research into the pathophysiology of complications in monochorionic pregnancies.
- Development of endoscopic approaches for the management of complications associated with monochorionic pregnancies.
- Development of innovative protocols for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of autoimmune diseases during pregnancy.
- Studies on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of congenital infections.
- Psychological and psychosocial studies investigating communication strategies related to pregnancy disorders and fetal or neonatal complications and diseases.
- Research on the neuropsychiatric follow-up of children born to women affected by pregnancy-related disorders.
- Studies on cancer and pregnancy.
