Animal Facility
The Animal Facility, a building covering approximately 300 square metres, is equipped and authorised by the Ministry of Health, in accordance with Legislative Decree 116/92, for the housing and use of laboratory animals, such as rats and mice, for scientific purposes. It is also accredited by the Ministry of Health for the use of Class 1 and 2 genetically modified organisms (Legislative Decree 206/01). The presence of an autoclave enables the sterilisation and decontamination of all materials used.
In 2014, pursuant to Legislative Decree 26/14, a scientific committee known as the ‘Animal Welfare Body’ was established to carry out a technical and scientific assessment of projects involving the handling of laboratory animals.
Its aim is to support the scientific work of university researchers by enabling them to carry out ‘in vivo’ research in compliance with current legislation and in accordance with international standards of ‘Good Laboratory Practice’.
