Solid and Structural Mechanics

The group

The scientific activity of the group concerns all classical and innovative themes of the mechanics of solids, materials, and structures. More specifically, the group develops and disseminates innovative scientific tools for the analysis and design of solids and structures with application to civil, mechanical, electrical, and biomedical engineering, to achitecture, and to other applied sciences. This broad spectrum of interests requires the constitutive modelling of materials subject to multi-phisical stimuli.

Research activity

  • mechanical behaviour of composite materials and structures,
  • small-scale plasticity of polycrystalline metals, with focus on size effects,
  • constitutive modelling of geomaterials,
  • micromechanics of syntactic foams,
  • multiphysical behaviour of soft electroactive polymers for actuation and  sensing; rack propagation in brittle materials,
  • multi-filed asymptotic homogenisation techniques,
  • variational formulations for physical initial-boundary value problems,
  • viscoelastoplasticity of termoset polymers, with focus on epoxy resins,
  • constitutive modelling of metals subject to finite deformations,
  • analytical solutions for drawing processes,
  • chaotic behaviour of elastic-plastic structures.
