Consultation and loan

Consultation

All categories of users can consult the entire paper heritage on site.

The catalogue always specifies whether the document identified is for internal consultation only (i.e. whether it is excluded from loan).

If the material is located on open shelves, the catalogue indicates its location: users can go to the room and can freely take volumes from the shelves, leaving them on the tables at the end, so that they can be correctly replaced by the staff. In this case, there is no limit to the number of books that can be consulted in one day.

If, on the other hand, the material is located in the storerooms, users must submit a consultation request from the catalogue, by entering their credentials (those used for all the university's online services in the case of institutional users, those issued by the libraries in the case of external users). The volumes must be collected from the library distribution desk, where they will remain available to the requester for two days (including the day of the request). A maximum of 10 books per day may be consulted from the storerooms.

The volumes kept in the Historical Section of the Economics and Law Library must be requested by going to the library and asking the staff.

For certain types of documents reserved for internal consultation only, institutional users are allowed to request a holiday loan (please see the Loan section).

Loan

The loan service is available to institutional users and those from affiliated entities. Loan is personal; therefore, it is forbidden to transfer the material to other people.

After finding the work of interest in the catalogue, users can check its availability and submit a loan request by entering their credentials (those used for all university’s online services in the case of institutional users, those issued by the libraries in the case of external users). If the volumes are already on loan to another user, it is possible to make a reservation, so as to reserve them in the user’s name and receive a notification when they are returned.

The material must be collected from the library distribution desk, where it remains available to the requester for four days (including the day of the request). Upon collection, the user is required to sign a receipt, while upon return, they will receive a return notification by email, which must be kept for at least three months.

If necessary, the books may be collected by another person, who must provide a signed delegation form (available at the bottom of the page), their own identification document and a photocopy of the identity card of the person delegating them.

In the three days before the due date, it is possible to extend the loan from the personal area of the catalogue, provided that the volume has not been reserved by another user in the meantime.

The number, duration of loans and extensions vary according to the user's category: please refer to the Service regulations_ITA and the Service Charter_ITA.

The loan of volumes located in the DAS (Right to Study) section is reserved only for students enrolled at the University of Brescia and guest students. For the number, duration of loans and extensions, please refer to the Service regulations_ITA and the Service Charter_ITA.

The following material is excluded from loan:

  1. antique, rare and valuable books, degree theses, technical standards, originals of documents on non-paper support;
  2. single copies of material reserved for consultation (e.g. encyclopaedias, bibliographic repertoires, dictionaries, glossaries, handbooks, formularies, codes, collections of normative texts) and exam texts;
  3. journals, loose-leaf publications, damaged books, books published before 1960, as well as documents that the library managers consider appropriate to exclude for specific reasons.

Institutional users may request the holiday loan of certain documents reserved for consultation (those listed above in point 2), up to a maximum of 4 volumes at a time. This type of loan is made in correspondence with the closure of the libraries during weekends and on public holidays. Requests must be submitted on the last day of opening, two hours before closing time, and the documents must be returned by 10.00 a.m. on the first day of reopening.

In the event of late return of borrowed volumes, the sanctions set out in the Service regulations_ITA are applied, ranging from the temporary suspension of services (proportional to the number of days of delay) to more serious measures.
